Respawn have introduced a new matchmaking system into Titanfall that’s designed to pit more even teams against each other, hopefully resulting in closer fought battles and less frustration.
Fire up the game and a “Improved Matchmaking (Beta)” option will appear under the Classic Multiplayer section, allowing you to gain instant access to the new system, though keep in mind that it will take a bit longer to pair you up with a team.
So, how does the new system work? Firstly Respawn prioritised quality over speed when it comes to searching for a game, hence the slight delay. With this extra time the game will be able to find a better match for you and your team. Secondly, rather than playing against the same opponents over and over the game will now periodically split the two teams up, update skill levels and then find new matches.
“This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round. Did you lose to a really great team? We’ll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team – and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked. This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you’re having an off night.”
Should Respawn be happy with the results of the new system they’ll expand it to include other game types.
“We’re going to keep a close eye on game balance and refine things as needed to make everyone’s experience the best that we can.”
Generally speaking I’ve not found the matchmaking to be too bad in Titanfall, but there’s definately been instances where my team have been matched up with an enemy team brimming with highly skilled players while ours only had one or two, or vice versa, making for some irritating matches. Hopefully we’ll see an increase in balanced games.
