This year’s Summer Games Fest kicked off with the unexpected announcement of a brand new Prince of Persia game from Ubisoft, titled Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

The trailer gives us an idea of what to expect from this side-scrolling adventure which Ubisoft claims will feature Metroidvania elements. Visually, it has a cartoony, chunky style that reminds me a little of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time in its tone.

But you won’t be playing as a prince in this new adventure. Instead, you’ll be stepping into the boots of Sargon, “a young, gifted warrior, and member of an elite group called The Immortals”.

“As they are sent to rescue Prince Ghassan, they will explore Mount Qaf, a once wondrous place, now cursed and hostile,” reads the game’s description.. “Sargon and his brothers-in-arms will soon discover that time itself will be a treacherous foe and that the world balance must be restored.”

Notice the mention of time itself being a foe, in keeping with the franchise’s penchant for messing around with time-travel. The trailer also shows Sargon meeting a version of himself, so perhaps we’ll get to pull off some classic time-travelling nonsense between all the platforming and combat.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will release 18th January 2024 for  PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Meanwhile, the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is still stuck in development hell.
