Nintendo and Universal might be teaming up for a second time to make a new movie based on the Legend of Zelda games.

During the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast, notable movie critic Jeff Sneider revealed that he has heard rumblings that Universal and Nintendo are close to finalising a deal to make a Legend of Zelda movie.

Sneider states that he got the tip from a “great” source during the prior week’s episode but didn’t want to “just blurt it out.” He attempted to follow up with the source but hasn’t heard back. Naturally, you should take the information with a pinch of salt then.

“Zelda will be, is looking like the next big Illumination Nintendo franchise, which again, I think we were all sort of expecting, but I’m told that that is happening and it’s costing Universal a pretty penny because of the success of Super Mario,” said Sneider.

Success might be something of an understatement. At this point, the highly enjoyable Super Mario Bros. Movie is said to have grossed over $1.3 billion, making it the third highest-grossing animated movie ever. In case you wondering, Frozen 2 is in 2nd place at $1.45 billion, and the 2019 Lion King wears the crown at $1.66 billion.

In other words, it is hardly surprising that Nintendo wants a repeat performance, and Universal is surely ecstatic about Mario’s box office power.

The big question is what era of Zelda would the movie draw from? Would it try to replicate the feel of the modern games, or like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will it attempt to capture the overall vibe of the series?
