UPDATE: Nintendo has announced a Direct taking place on June 21st.

ORIGINAL STORY: A Twitter user by the name of Pyoro_ND has stated that a new 2D Mario game will be announced at a Nintendo Direct this week, along with a remake of a SNES classic.

Pyoro has a pretty decent track record. Recently, he or she predicted the announcements of Sonic Superstars and 1-2 Switch, and has leaked several other games over the past few years. Of course, you should still take this with a pinch of salt and a dash of pepper.

But other sources have been claiming that a Nintendo Direct will be released within the next week or two. The same sources have also mentioned 1st party games appearing at the show, potentially backing up Pyoro’s claims.

Pyoro has also since Tweeted that the new Mario game will not include the word “New.” The last time we saw a Super Mario Bros game was actually waaaaaaay back in 2012 on the Wii U, which is crazy to even think about. It makes sense to ditch the term “New” though unless Nintendo wants to call this one the Newer New Super Smash Bros.

In his Tweet announcing the SNES remake, he emphasised the word “wonder” within “wondering” which seems to be an obvious hint towards something. My knowledge of SNES is limited, so the only thing I could find is Wonder Project J, a Japanese life simulation game developed by Enix and released in 1994. It managed to sell around 1.4 million copies in Japan, an impressive number for the time.

It would certainly be a rather unusual choice for a remake, though. The SNES has a wealth of games to choose from and remake, so with all of this available why pick Wonder Project J? I can’t help but feel it has to be something else.
