Final Fantasy 16 is due to launch in just one day and reviews are expected to drop around that time, but Japanese magazine Famitsu is already in the hands of some subscribers and within its hallowed pages is a chunky review of the latest FF title.

Credit to ryokutya2089 for posting details of the review. According to ryokutya2089, the famous magazine gave Final Fantasy 16 a score of 39 out of 40. For those not aware, each review is done by four people who award four scores that are then combined. In the magazine’s illustrious run they’ve only awarded 29 titles a perfect score, the very first being The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time back in 1998.

Two games have actually scored the coveted 40/40 this year: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Street Fighter 6.

Two Final Fantasy games have managed the feat before as well. In 2006 Final Fantasy XII achieved it, and then in 2011 Final Fantasy XIII-2 earned itself 40/40 as well.

As for Final Fantasy 16, its actually the sixth game in the series to get 39/40.

According to ryokutya2089, the review seems to view the story as “magnificent” and “heartbreaking.” It’s also mentioned that it takes about 35-40 hours to get through the story, and 70 hours to do absolutely everything.
