It can often be hard to see exactly how much exclusive games can influence the sales of consoles, but the launch of Starfield has provided some new information, according to a report by GameIndustry.biz.
According to new GfK data, sales of the Xbox Series S and Series X jumped by a whopping 76% percent for the week ending on September 2nd. This makes it the best week for sales in the UK so far with the week ending September 9th the second highest.
Some of this can be attributed to the launch of a new Xbox Series S 1TB edition. The bigger drive boosts the tiny console’s storage by a considerable amount, all for £50 more than the regular version.
However, the biggest cause of the sales jump is presumably Starfield, which came out on September 6th, though Premium Edition owners got access on September 1st. For the week ending September 2nd the Xbox Series X saw its sales boosted by 46% week-on-week, a significant gain for a console that has been struggling to keep up with the PlayStation 5.
As for Starfield, it’s going from strength to strength. Its Opencritic rating is staying steady at 87, and SteamBD is reporting at least 100,000 players per day on Steam. Mind you, Baldur’s Gate 3 is still hitting at least 150,000 per day.
Anyway, it looks like Starfield is doing exactly what Microsoft want: shifting some extra consoles and drawing in players. According to Microsoft, in fact, Starfield was played by over 6 million people on the first day of release, with many of them presumably being on Game Pass.
