Mortal Kombat 1 has fought its way to the top of the UK boxed charts following its release earlier this month. According to the GfK data covered Gameindustry.biz most of the sales were on PlayStation 5, followed by Xbox and then the utterly disastrous Switch version. I’m in the middle of reviewing Mortal Kombat 1 and think its a really solid entry in the series, but not quite the big leap I was hoping for.
2nd place is held by Hogwarts Legacy which continues to sell like crazy. The last we heard the game had managed to generate $1 billion in revenue and had sold over 15 million copies. Those are some crazy numbers and considering its still holding down second place in the boxed charts, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it potentially surpass 20 million copies.
Meanwhile there’s a real surprise in the third slot: Lies of P. Lies of P is Round8 Studio’s debut game which launched on Game Pass, which is why it’s astounding that it has also managed to steal the 3rd slot. Inspired by Pinnochio and Fromsoft’s games, Lies of P is currently holding a ‘Strong’ rating of 82 over on Opencritic. It’s awesome to see the developers managing to do so well for themselves, and I’m hoping to fire up Lies of P and find out what all the fuss is about for myself.
Payday 3 has also made its debut on the charts and also came out on Game Pass, but it hasn’t managed to do quite as well. It sits in the 7th spot, and on Opencritic has a ‘Fair’ score of 67. Early reports and user feedback indicate it has suffered from severe server issues that have left a lot of people unable to play. Hopefully things get sorted out soon.
And finally I wanted to point out Cyberpunk 2077 which leapt up from 21st to 6th due to the launch of the mammoth 2.0 patch and the new Phantom Liberty expansion. In total, the game got a spike of 163% extra sales, which GfK reports was helped a lot by price promotions. I’m not sure if I’m going to have the time or even desire to revisit the game, but congrats to CDProjket Red for managing to rebuild some of their reputation.
