Mortal Kombat 1 looks like it will be getting a substantial expansion akin to Mortal Kombat 11‘s Aftermath DLC which continued the main game’s storyline.

The news comes via none other than Ed Boon himself. Speaking at a CCXP23 event in Brazil, Boon mentioned what sounds an awful lot like an Aftermath-style expansion for Mortal Kombat 1. “Just like we did with MK11, we’re going to release a second part with more story and we have a big surprise after that,” he stated.

The Aftermath expansion was a chunky add-on that added a whole new campaign continuing the existing story, characters, Friendships and more. However, the surprise that Boon talks about is anyone’s guess. Considering how many franchises have had guest appearances, it could be just about anything, from a Mario crossover to My Little Pony.

Boon also mentioned that he and the team at Netherealm intend on supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for longer than they supported Mortal Kombat 11. They ended their support for the last game around 2 years after it came out.

Mortal Kombat 1 has seen its fair share of controversy since it launched, though. The special Halloween Fatility cost $10 when it came out, immediately sparking outrage among fans who felt the price was absurd. Netherealm backpedalled on the pricing and offered anyone who bought it a free season pass.

It seems they are learning from their mistakes as the new Seasonal Fatality bundle is priced at $10, offering a lot more than a single Fatality for the same price But fans are still understandably upset that a $70 game is pushing expensive microtransactions in the form of Fatalities, costumes and Season Passes. If the past game is anything to go by, Mortal Kombat 1 will be treated as essentially a live-service title with constant updates designed to keep the money rolling in.

Whether any of this will affect sales is hard to say, though. Within its first month of sales, Mortal Kombat 1 managed to sell 3 million copies. Mortal Kombat 11 went on to sell over 15 million as of 2022 and brought in over $500 million in profit, so if MK1 has similar legs then it will undoubtedly be another big hit for Netherealm and Warner Bros.
