In a PlayStation Blog post, Sony has said it is currently testing the ability to use PS VR2 on PC, potentially making the headset a more enticing prospect.

The news was buried under the headline which focused on the games coming to PS VR2 down the line.

“…we’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”

No details were shared of exactly how Sony plans on implementing this. The most obvious way would be to simply connect the headset to PC and allow it to use SteamVR, opening up the vast Steam library of VR games to users. However, there’s also a possibility that they plan on using SteamLink to stream games from PC to your PS5. This could be the more appealing option to Sony as it would mean users have to own a PS5

Being able to swap the headset between the PS5 and PC could potentially be a huge boon as it adds value to offset the hefty price tag. If they go the streaming route, then While I don’t think it will boost sales dramatically, every little bit helps, especially as Sony’s support for the PS VR2 has been quite weak thus far.

Even third parties haven’t been rushing to support Sony’s hardware. A prime example is Rec Room. Speaking in a Reddit AMA, Rec Room’s CCO and co-founder said that they had looked into porting their game to PS VR 2 but couldn’t justify the cost.

“We’ve looked into it, it’s a non-trivial port, and we haven’t found a way to make it make economic sense,” Cameron Brown said. “In an ideal world, we would love to bring [Rec Room] to PSVR2, but we can’t justify the cost based on the numbers.”

Sony hasn’t said much about PS VR2 sales, indicating that they haven’t been strong. 600,000 units were sold in the first six weeks, but we’re not a year on since it launched and Sony has remained quiet. If sales are strong, companies are usually quick to boast about it, especially if they are publically traded like Sony.
