Nintendo’s recent Direct showcase held a number of excellent surprises, but for dedicated fighting fans there was something truly massive: Marvel vs Capcom 2 (MVC2) is finally going to be available on modern hardware. Except for Xbox, for some reason.

The Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classic package will launch this year on PS4, Switch and PC for $49.99. It’ll contain a whopping seven titles. Check them out below.

  • X-MEN® CHILDREN OF THE ATOM
  • MARVEL SUPER HEROES
  • MARVEL™ vs. CAPCOM® CLASH OF SUPER HEROES
  • MARVEL™ vs. CAPCOM® 2 New Age of Heroes
  • MARVEL SUPER HEROES™ vs. STREET FIGHTER®
  • X-MEN™ vs. STREET FIGHTER®
  • THE PUNISHER

Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the standout of the bunch, though. It’s widely considered to be one of the greatest 2D fighting games in history. The problem is that the game hasn’t been readily available for years after Capcom lost the licensing rights in 2013. The last time it was widely available was a 2009 digital re-release for PSN and Xbox Live Arcade. That was followed by an iOS release in 2012, just one year before the licensing rights vanished and the game was pulled from sale.

Without an easy method to get hold of the game, only the most die-hard fans could play it through either emulation or by purchasing a second-hand copy of the original physical game which can be very expensive indeed.

For years, Maximilian Dood, a fighting-game Youtuber, has campaigned to get the game re-released or remastered. His campaign drew a lot of fan interest, and perhaps his efforts along with the dedicated fanbase might be why Marvel vs Capcom 2 is finally coming back.

Considering the game is so widely acclaimed, its actually odd that Capcom and Marvel didn’t make a bigger deal out of this package. Hell,it doesn’t even pop up in the trailer until mid-way through, while X-Men: Children of the Atom gets to be the very first game introduced.

The Fighting Collection will be released this year for PC, Switch and PS4. Sadly, Xbox users seem to be getting left out.
