The more things change, the more they stay the same, it seems. There’s definitely a selection of games that have gripped gamers around the globe, and their influence is almost impossible to break. Case in point, the latest data on the most played games in 2025.
Mat Piscatella of Circana shared the data, revealing that the most played games on PlayStation in 2025 were: Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTA V, Roblox in that order. But then Mat shared the same data for 2024, and it looked rather….familiar.

Yup. The list is identical. The most played games from the last year remained exactly the same as the prior year.
Piscatella also shared the Xbox data for 2025 and it showed the same list of games, but with some slight differences in order. For 2025, the Xbox list had Roblox and Minecraft swapped around compared to PlayStation. The order also changed from 2024.

It’s a little depressing to look at, although it’s also kind of impressive that old games like GTA V and Minecraft remain relevant to this very day and continue generating money hand over fist.
It’s perhaps a sign of stagnation in the industry, too. These games are so entrenched that almost every other game has to compete with them, from massive triple-A to indie, because time is limited.
