What a generation, eh? Right now we’re in a time where early adopters of this generation’s consoles actually ended up paying for less, and now there’s a report suggesting another PlayStation price hike is coming.
The man with the word is Gyo, who has proven reasonably reliable in the past, especially when it comes to matters of price. He acts as both a content creator and a retail owner specialising in gaming in France, so he often does have an inside track on hardware and game costs. He accurately reported on the previous Xbox hikes, for example, before they became official.
Gyo says “The announcement will be made shortly. I do not know the exact effective date.”
According to Gyo, here’s the new pricing:
PS5 Slim from €549.99 (~$634) to €649.99 (~$749)
PS5 Pro from €799.99 (~$922) to €899.99 (~$1,038)
PS Portal from €219.99 (~$253) to €249.99 (~$288)
Reminder: the PS5 originally launched at €499.99.
Gyo’s claims have also been backed up by Spanish insider eXtas1s who also states the announcement is being made tomorrow, March 27. eXtas1s has a very mixed record, often being right about Xbox and Game Pass related news. PlayStation stuff, though, is not usually his area of expertise.
There is some evidence going against the claims, though. In February of this year, Sony CFO Lin Tao stated they had secured enough memory for PS5 production through the 2026 holiday season, including negotiating with suppliers to meet demand and avoid shortages or immediate price hikes.
In other words, a price hike would go against want Sony said just a few months ago. Then again, things change. And in this case, said change might be total arse for the rest of us.
I guess we will know for sure by tomorrow.
