Well, yesterday’s rumours turned out to be true as Sony has officially announced a massive price increase for the PS5 and PS Portal which will take effect on April 2.

You can find a complete breakdown of the prices below, but the general gist is that prices have gone up by another $100/€100/£90 over the last price hike for each console. I’ve also included the original launch prices for the consoles as well, which show just how steeply the pricing has risen since day 1. This is the first console generation where it has actually been better to be an early adopter, as usually prices drop over the years, not rise.

“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,” said Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at SIE. “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

Previously this year, Sony had said it had built a stockpile of consoles to help avoid having to raise the price, and intended on monetizing existing players more, too. Clearly, both of these measures have failed in the face of rising RAM prices, the global economy driving off a cliff for the millionth time and about a hundred other things.
