There’s some good news if you still play on a PS4 and have been itching to play the newest God of War game. No, not the Laufey one, the angry teenager one – God of War: Sons of Sparta.
The indication that a PS4 port of Sons of Sparta is imminent comes from the PlayStation Game Size twitter account, which is known for scraping the backend of PlayStation (get your mind out of the gutter) to gather up information about download and install sizes.
The account tends to keep things simple, which is why it revealed the information by simply posting an image of God of War: Sons of Sparta’s cover art with the words, “God of War: Sons of Sparta – PS4.”
When someone asked if this meant the game was coming to PS4, PlayStation Game Size simply replied: “yes.” And here I thought Kratos was a man of few words.
Sony largely abandoned new first-party PS4 releases several years ago, with God of War Ragnarök in 2022 among its last major cross-generation exclusives. MLB The Show 24 followed in March 2024, while the smaller, free My First Gran Turismo arrived in December of that year. MLB The Show 24 is something of an exception to the rule, because while it is a PlayStation first-party game, MLB pushed them into having the game be multiplatform.
Anyway, there’s no doubt that Megacat and Sony can get God of War: Sons of Sparta running on last-gen hardware – it’s not exactly a technical powerhouse – but it is surprising they’re bothering considering they’ve been actively moving away from the PS4.
Which does lead me down a fun little road called Speculation Alley. My guess is this is a way to try to draw out some extra sales. We’ve not had any official word from Sony about how many copies were sold – somewhat telling by itself – which leaves us with Alinea Analytics, which estimated that it had sold 132,000 copies in just under four months. Whether it’s Sony chasing more sales or Megacat.
PlayStation Game Size also posted the actual ID tag for the PS4 version: UP9000-CUSA57767_00-SONSOFSPARTAPS40. They went on to say, “No date yet, but should be soon”
Of course, this discovery might not lead to anything. For example, in 2021 there was evidence of a Demon’s Souls PS4 version, and it was never released. That said, the evidence here seems strong.
Personally, I found Sons of Sparta to be a decent Metroidvania game, but not a very good God of War title.
