Valve has finally announced the price for the Steam Frame, their new all-in-one VR headset, and you’d better be prepared to sell your house to own one. Prices start at £889 for the 256GB version, and go up to  £1,089 for the 1TB configuration.

Unsurprisingly, the high price has been the focal point of many of the reviews for the Steam Frame, because with an inflated price like that the question isn’t whether it’s good, it’s whether it’s good enough to warrant going bankrupt to buy one.

Reviews suggest you do get an excellent headset for the money, particularly if you already own a gaming PC that’s packing some muscle. PC Gamer scored it 80/100 and called it “the best all-round VR headset I’ve used to date.” IGN was similarly impressed by its PC gaming abilities, while Rock Paper Shotgun described it as another best-in-class VR headset from Valve.

That praise comes with a sizeable but, though. The Verge gave it 5/10, writer Sean Hollister finding it exciting but described feeling like he was beta testing the whole time. Ars Technica found it both “overengineered and underbaked.” Engadget’s 6.5/10 review liked the standalone experience but struggled with the price, while Kotaku found it hard to recommend over a cheaper Quest 3. The emerging verdict is less “bad headset” than “great PC VR kit for a fairly small group of people willing to pay for it.”

Chances are the Steam Frame was never actually meant to cost this much cash. We are still firmly stuck in a technology price hike that’s raised the cost of…well, everything to absurd degrees. Valve’s own Steam Deck had its price increased to the bloody moon. If we assume they had to whack up the Steam Frame by roughly the same price, the VR headset would have originally cost around £719 for the base version and £879 for more storage. That’s $899 and $999 in freedom dollars.

Still not cheap, and certainly not as cheap as it would have been a few years back, but better than whatever the hell this is *gestures at the world.*
