The ongoing backlash against Sony’s decision to kill PlayStation physical discs in 2028 is still burning, and now PlayStation’s latest exclusives seems to be shifting discs.
According to Ampere Analysis data posted by Christopher Dring of The Game Business, Marvel’s Wolverine is currently sitting at around 2.16 million copies sold, which is slightly higher than the 1.9 million total estimated by Alinea Analytics that I covered back on September 18. Assuming both totals are fairly accurate, it would mean the games sales have dropped quite dramatically, selling roughly 216,000 copies more.
Those numbers still feel kind of low for a first-party PlayStation title, especially one with Wolverine on the cover. Hell, it’s not even half of what Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 managed in just 11 days. But it is on track to match up pretty well with the likes of Ghost of Yotei, and is outselling Astro Bot and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
But the really interesting bit is that Ampere Analysis says 35% of those Wolverine copies sold were physical, equating to approximately 756,000 boxed copies. In his article, Dring also notes that Europe really showed out, because if you narrow the data down to that region only, a whopping 51% of all copies sold were physical.
That some pretty impressive numbers for physical copies, especially when you combine it with data from other PlayStation titles. It probably won’t convince Sony to change their mind, of course, but it does give you an idea of how many people they could potentially lose, depending on how many of those people accept the transition to digital.
