Console prices may be rising, but that isn’t enough to stop people buying them, albeit definately at a slower pace. Sony’s latest financials show that the PS5 has managed to sell another 2.6 million units in the second quarter of 2026.
In the same quarter last year it managed 4 million, so that’s a 1.4 million decline. It’s better than the first quarter of 2026, though, where just 1.6 milllion consoles were sold, down from the 2.5 million the previous year.
That brings the total number of PS5s sold to 97.9 million. Given the trajectory and what will likely be a decent boost in sales from GTA 6 when it launches this month, PS5 should clear 100 million by the next financial report. That means it’s closing the gap to claiming the Wii’s spot as the 7th best-selling console of all time at 101.63 million sold. The OG PlayStation sits in 6th spot at 102.49 million.
The big question is whether the PS5 will manage to beat the PS4 which has sold 117.2 million units.
| Position | Console | Release Year | Units Sold |
| 1 | PlayStation 2 | 2000 | 160 million |
| 2 | Nintendo Switch | 2017 | 157.20 million |
| 3 | Nintendo DS | 2004 | 154.02 million |
| 4 | Game Boy/Game Boy Colour | 1989/1998 | 118.69 million |
| 5 | PlayStation 4 | 2013 | 117.2 million |
| 6 | PlayStation | 1994 | 102.49 million |
| 7 | Wii | 2006 | 101.63 million |
| 8 | PlayStation 5 | 2020 | 97.9 million |
| 9 | PlayStation 3 | 2005 | 87.4 million |
| 10 | Xbox 360 | 2006 | 84 million |
We’re heading into Q3 which is historically the time in the year when PlayStation will sell the most units. 7.9 million PS5s were sold during this period last year, for example. And like I said, the launch of GTA 6 will undoubtedly help sell a few more consoles.
