The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a long ways off, but we are slowly starting to get some idea of what it will look like. Today’s big detail? It will be the first game to run on Creation Engine 3.

Bethesda head-honcho Todd Howard sat down for an interview with the Kinda Funny Gamescast on February 18 where they discussed some wide-ranging topics. Naturally, the next Elder Scrolls was a big point of interest, and that’s where Howard confirmed that it’ll be running on a new version of the Creation Engine.

“We spent the last, you know, several years bringing Creation Engine 2, which powers Starfield, up to Creation Engine 3. That’s going to power Elder Scrolls 6 and beyond,” said Todd. “Um, and you know, obviously we do all the rendering things. We’re really happy with the new stuff that we’re doing, but also kind of world systems loading, how we bring things into the world, how we get that detail close to the camera kind of immediately.

Starfield was the only game to run on Creation Engine 2, so it’s interesting to heard that Bethesda immediately began shifting to a newer version of their engine already, considering how long they held on to the original Creation Engine.

It makes sense, though. Starfield represented a fairly big leap compared to the original version of the engine, but it still felt archaic compared to other engines on the market.
