Xbox’s new boss Asha Sharma is already looking to begin making changes to the brand, a new leaked memo suggests, and making Game Pass cheaper might be one of them.

Tom Warren of The Verge has the details, claiming to have got his sneaky hands on an internal memo sent around the Xbox team.

According to the memo, Sharma believes that “Game Pass has become too expensive for players” and hints toward future plans to make the service more flexible.

“Game Pass is central to gaming value on Xbox. It’s also clear that the current model isn’t the final one,” wrote Sharma in the internal memo. “Short term, Game Pass has become too expensive for players, so we need a better value equation. Long term, we will evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system which will take time to test and learn around.”

It’s important to note that Sharma does not directly say that making the service cheaper again after last year’s insane 50% price is on the table. Instead, she simply simply says it needs to be a “better value equation” which could mean cheaper, or it could mean adding more stuff so that $30 feels worth it.

Interestingly, we just learned via Jez Corden that Microsoft might be considering removing Call of Duty from Game Pass. When Microsoft was debating adding the series to the subscription service a few years ago, part of the debate was how much Game Pass would undercut the amount of copies sold.

According to Corden, Call of Duty also royally screws up the internal weighted formula that Game Pass uses, hoovering up a lot of the internal revenue that would otherwise be used to bring in other titles.

Going back to the leaked memo, Sharma mentions making Game Pass more flexible. Corden put out the idea of being able to do something like optionally removing Call of Duty from your subscription to drop the price. Perhaps that might be something Sharma is considering?

There’s also been rumours of yet more tiers being added to the system.

Sharma is apparently promising to go in-depth with Xbox staff later this week, so if we get another memo leak we may get a better idea of what is being planned.
