The current-gen update for Darksiders Warmastered Edition is officially here, adding in native 4k resolution support, 60FPS, a photo mode and a few other benefits. But there’s a twist to this story: Xbox owners get the update for free, PlayStation owners have to pay.
If you already own the game on Xbox, there’s no issue: go let it update and voila, a better version of the game at no extra cost.
For PlayStation owners, the update costs $9.99.
So….why? Well, it seems to boil down to the way the base game is priced on last-gen consoles. The PS4 edition is staying at $20, while the new PS5 version will cost $30.
Meanwhile, the Xbox One version of the game is going to get a price increase from $19.99$ to $29.99, which will match the Xbox Series S/X version of the game.
It’s a bit confusing, and I’m not sure why publisher THQ Nordic has chosen to do it this way. It seems rather pointless, so I’m assuming there’s some sort of technical reason behind the scenes on the different storefronts. But who the hell knows.
Here’s how THQ Nordic themselves explain it:
Owners of the PlayStation 4 version of Darksiders Warmastered Edition can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for 9.99€ / 9.99$. Players who own the Xbox One version will receive the upgrade to the Xbox Series X|S version free of charge.
With the launch on current-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X|S version will be available for 29.99€ / 29.99$, while the Xbox One version price will increase from 19.99€ / $19.99$ to 29.99€ / 29.99$.
The PlayStation 4 version will remain available for 19.99€ / 19.99$, while the PlayStation 5 version launches at 29.99€ / 29.99$.
