UPDATE: The user rating for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has now dropped to just 2.5, with over a thousand people having voted. The critic score remains 90 after 44 reviews.

In case you didn’t know, today saw the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the seventh Call of Duty title to appear in the last seven years, and the eighth Call of Duty game in total. During this time Call of Duty has come to dominate not only the FPS market, but the gaming market as a whole, becoming the single highest selling videogame franchise in history, which is just terrifying when you stop and think about it.

But if you’ve been on the internet lately, and in this day and age you must certainly have been, then you might have noticed a growing number of gamers have been becoming somewhat disillusioned with the franchise of late, and especially with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It was a noticeable resistance when Black Ops was released, but has now become a huge movement of gamers who believe Modern Warfare 3 to simply be Modern Warfare 3 in disguise. Of course, despite the fact that everyone swears they won’t buy the game, we know that Modern Warfare 3 will most likely sell millions and therefore ensure the existence of another Call of Duty title.

Still, these Call of Duty resistance members have definitely made their presence felt on the review score aggregate site, Metacritic. Currently Modern Warfare 3 holds a total meta score of 90 based off of 30 critic reviews from around the world, which is a pretty impressive score. However, the user score section shows a rather different story. A current total of 541 gamers have logged on to Metacritic and posted their own mini-reviews or have just scored the game, resulting in the Xbox 360 version Modern Warfare 3 having a total user score of just 2.8.

Breaking down the scores, that’s 128 positive user reviews, 19 mixed reviews and 394 negative reviews, although negative is putting it mildly.

Is this the fall of Call of Duty? Or is it just yet another case of a simple trend to hate on something popular? Only time will tell.
