In surprising news, Minecraft developer Markus “Notch” Persson has replied to a recent revelation by Tim Schafer concerning Psychonauts 2 with the following message on his Twitter feed:

@TimOfLegend Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen.

So, what’s the context, you might wonder? Tim Schafer – well-known developer at Double Fine who was the brains behind Psychonauts and has worked on other such games as Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Iron Brigade, Brutal Legend, etc. – said to Digital Spy that “I’d love to do that game, but I’d have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars, that’s all.”

Notch is the multi-millionaire founder of Mojang – the team behind Minecraft. If you don’t believe his suggestion, Notch himself iterated that he was serious. So far, Schafer has yet to respond to Notch, but if he accepted such an offer, then I think that it would be one of the best moves ever made in the industry. It would demonstrate how far the gaming industry could go through altruism. Even though I never played Psychonauts (sorry), I’d love to see such a move solely because of how astounding it is.

At this point, it seems all Schafer has to do is say “yes.”

It’s up to speculation as to what this will mean for Notch and Mojang. If he funds the project and the terms are accepted – whatever they might be – does this mean Notch might help develop Psychonauts 2? Now, of course, we have to keep in mind that this is just a Twitter post. Nothing is confirmed yet, but I doubt Notch would say he’s serious if he was just joking about such a thing. Think about all the hearts he would break if he were only fibbing!

Signs appear to be somewhat positive. Tim Schafer has taken notice of Notch’s proposal through Twitter, which many people kindly notified him about. Nah, I’m just kidding, a whole bunch of people flooded him and he wrote:

“Man, so many tweets. I assume this is all people asking for codes to Happy Action Theater and Rise of the Martian Bear?” He said.

Of course, to his surprise (I guess), he learned what they were talking about.

“Oh wait. Hm. This is interesting.”

… And as if that isn’t enough, Double Fine later issued a press release to Giant Bomb stating…

“Tim and Markus are talking. Who knows what might happen?”

I know what I want to happen!

What do you guys think? Will we finally see a long-anticipated sequel to Psychonauts, or is it just salt in old, opened wounds?
