UPDATE: GameInformer placed a banner on their site that seemed to confirm the American Revolution as the setting for Assassin’s Creed III. The banner was hastily removed, but not before ToasterVision managed to grab a screenshot. Go check it out.

According to an artwork released by a Best Buy employee (shown above), Assassin’s Creed 3 may put you in the shoes of a Native American assassin. This is, of course, judging by the beard you can just slightly see under the shade from his hood, the bow and quiver he’s wearing, and his attire.

It can be safely assumed that the game will take place during the American Revolution, as well, due to the nature of the weapons the assassin carries (such as a flintlock pistol), the Betsy Ross-style American flag, and of course, anything that suggests that the protagonist is a Native American. Seriously, what other times do you see Native Americans dress like that while standing in front of an 18th century variant of the American flag?

Ubisoft has posted on their Assassin’s Creed Facebook page that an announcement for… something… will be revealed on the official Assassin’s Creed website. Nothing else was mentioned; it might have more to do with Assassin’s Creed 3, but you never know. It might just be coincidental timing.

My guess was that the next installment would take place during World War II, but it seems like Ubisoft doesn’t want to get too far ahead of themselves just yet. The American Revolution was sort of another guess I had, in the back of my mind, every now and then when I thought about what a theoretical Assassin’s Creed 3 might use for its setting. I would have liked to see the next game take place in Asia, perhaps in China or Japan, but ah well.

Feel free to point out the irony of this article on a British owned blog.
