If you hadn’t already guessed it from my rather gushing review, I totally loved CDProjekt’s fantasy RPG, The Witcher 2, despite having never even played the original. The company demonstrated an ability to tell a mature story with twists, turns and stunning dialog. And their hard work was rewarded by the Witcher 2 selling a total of 1.7-million copies across both PC and Xbox 360. Not bad, boys and girls, not bad.
So, as a bit of a sci-fi nut, you can imagine my excitement when CDProjekt RED revealed a teaser image for a new RPG they had in developement, an RPG that seemed to have a distinctive futuristic style to it. Well, yesterday they officially announced that they’re working on a new Cyberpunk RPG based on Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk pen-and-paper RPG system.
Mike Pondsmith himself had this to say: “For over two decades, I’ve been proud to say that Cyberpunk’s been the gold standard of what it means to be a true cyberpunk game. And it’s been a huge success for me and our many fans, with over 5 million players worldwide. But over all that time we haven’t found the right team to bring our cyberpunk world to full digital life — until now. CD Projekt Red is the team we’ve been hoping for. Their incredible work on The Witcher and The Witcher 2 shows that they share the same dedication and love of great games that we do at Talsorian. I’m especially stoked that they want our participation in making this game a fantastic project that will live up to everything Cyberpunk fans (old and new) have been waiting for. Trust me — this game is going to rock,”
The new game is going to be developed by a brand new team at CD Projekt RED Studio, made up of veterans from the Witcher series. The new team is promising interesting things for their title, including multiple classes, such as Hackers or blood-thirsty M<ercenaries, which can be equipped with a “vast” selection of cybernetic implants and weapons. They’re also planning on bringing the Witcers ambiguous moral choices, and the game-changing consequences of those choices, into the game as well. Finally, they’re also promising that this new Cyberpunk RPG will be, “designed for mature and demanding players who expect to be treated seriously,” and that, “the game will be richly detailed, non-linear, and with a complex and gripping story”.
Sounds good, right? Of course it does! Sadly no other solid gameplay details were revealed by the team, so we’ll just have to be patient.
