UPDATE: GameInformer have revealed that the COG soldier shrouded in shadow is Damon Baird and that the title of this new Gears of Wae game is Judgement. Click here for the details.
The fact that there would be another game in the Gears of War universe is no secret. Epic have said numerous times that they’d happily do more Gear of War games, and that makes perfect sense as there’s a considerable amount of history and depth to the Gears universe, even if you don’t realise it while playing the games. The Gears of War books have already delved into bits of the Gears history, such as the Pendulum Wars, leading many to wonder if the next game in the franchise would be a prequel set during the same era. Well, the speculation is almost over as Gameinformer have announced that the cover of their July issue will be the next Gears of War game.
As you can tell from the picture of the cover above, it depicts someone being led away in chains from a scene of destruction. So now I get to launch into some pointless speculation. An obvious option would, of course, be that the man in chains is Marcus Fenix and that the new game will be following the events that lead up to him being thrown in prison, which is where you find him at the start of the first game after having abandoned his post during the Battle of Epyhra to try to save his father. The burning building in the background of the picture might support this theory as it could be the Fenix mansion going up in flames after Marcus tried to save his father.
Or perhaps the game will star Adam Fenix himself. The book Gears of War: Aspho Fields revealed that he joined the COG during the Pendulum Wars, managing to work his way of the rank of Major. If so then we’d doubtless get to see exactly how he ends up in the position he does in Gears of War 3.
Another likely theory is that this is the Gears of War game that was supposedly in developement by People Can Fly, the crew that created Bulletstorm. Rumours have been flying around for a while now that they’re working on a prequel trilogy to the current Gears of War games. The name Gears of War: Exile has also be linked to that project, a name which would match the image of someone being led away in chains.
Personally, I believe it is the first game prequel trilogy that People Can Fly have been rumoured to be working on, and that it will follow the early career of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they join the COG and fight through the Pendulum Wars, before, of course, showing us the Battle of Epyhra, which is when the Locust horde launched a massive offensive against the COG capital of Ephyra. This would, of course, mean that the game would end with Marcus being led away in chains to face his court-martial after seemingly failing to save his father.
As for Gameinformer, they’re keeping quiet, simply saying that the game is coming out on Xbox 360 and that all will be revealed in their next issue. Oh, and that they’ll be releasing a teaser trailer packed with sneak peeks at their upcoming online Gears of War coverage on Monday, so make sure to check that out!
