Saying that the backlash over the ending of Mass Effect 3 was vicious is a bit like saying that Hitler had a mild dislike of Jews: it’s a huge understatement. Fans went ballistic over the ending which failed to provide any sort of closure for the characters that we had all come to know and love and that was riddled with plot holes, such as why……never mind, that’s not the topic on hand.
Bioware have today revealed the release date for the new Extended Cut DLC, which promises to expand upon the games ending through additional cinematic scenes and epilogue moments, hopefully providing the closure and explanations that we all so dearly desire. In short, this is Bioware trying to placate the angry hordes of gamers while still retaining the original ending they envisioned. Do remember, this is not a brand new ending for the game: it doesn’t change anything fundamental about the finale, but rather adds to it. Think of it as a directors cut. The official Extended Cut page explains in more detail:
What is included in the Extended Cut?
- The Extended Cut expands on the endings of Mass Effect 3 through additional scenes and epilogue sequences. It provides more of the answers and closure that players have been asking for. It gives a sense of what the future holds as a result of the decisions made throughout the series. And it shows greater detail in the successes or failures based on how players achieved their endings.
Does the Extended Cut change the endings?
- The Extended Cut is an expansion of the original endings to Mass Effect 3. It does not fundamentally change the endings, but rather it expands on the meaning of the original endings, and reveals greater detail on the impact of player decisions.
To experience all this new goodness you’ll need to load up a save from before you attacked the Cerberus base. If you’re one of those people who likes to live life on the dangerous side by only having one save, then sadly you’ll need to play through the game once again. Oh, and remember, you’re going to need to play through it a few times to see everything the Extended Cut offers:
“The Extended Cut endings will differ depending on choices made throughout the Mass Effect series, so multiple playthroughs with a variety of different decisions will be required to experience the variety of possibilities offered by the new content.”
So, when is it out and how much will it cost? Well, the Extended Cut, which comes in at a hefty 1.9GB, will be absolutely free to download and will be releasing on June 26th for Xbox 360 and PC, while Playstation 3 users will sadly have to wait until July 4th. Good lucky trying to stay spoiler free Playstation 3 gamers – just avoid the internet. Go on, it’ll be good for you.
