In an interview with Gametrailer’s Geoff Keighley, Hideo Kojima has revealed why David Hayter won’t be playing the part of Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a decision which has caused massive upset within the Metal Gear Solid fanbase, with many people rushing to their keyboards to exclaim that without Hayter reprising his role they wouldn’t be buying the game.
So, why has Kojima chosen to have one of gaming’s most famous characters voiced by someone completely different?
When Geoff Keighley broached the subject of whether or not it was true that somebody else would be playing the role, Kojima replied thusly: “I can say, yes, it will be a new person. I can’t say who it is yet.”
Geoff then mentioned that Hayter hadn’t even been asked to reprise his role, and then asked Kojima why Hayter wasn’t being brought back. Kojima replied: ” What we’re trying to accomplish here is recreate the Metal Gear series. It’s a new type of Metal Gear game, and we want to have this reflected in the voice actor as well.”
That certainly doesn’t seem to bode well for Hayter, as Kojima’s comment suggests that he won’t be required for this or future entries in the series, although fans have already begun petitions to bring Hayter back, so it’s always possible that Kojima may relent.
Currently the rumour is that Kiefer Sutherland, best known as Jack Bauer in the awesome TV series 24, may not only be voicing new character Ishmael, but Big Boss as well.
