War. War never changes. It’s a famous line, and one that almost feels like it applies to videogames in recent years. The game’s industry churns out shooter after grey shooter, each as generic as the last with only a few shining beacons of brilliance breaking up the monotomy.

Another of those beacons is due to light next year in the form of Ubisoft’s new title, Valiant Heart, a game set during the first World War which follows the story 5 interconnected people and one dog, a story inspired real letters from the war.

In terms of gameplay Valiant Hearts is a 2D puzzler, but little more is known past that. What we do know is the game is running on Ubisoft’s UbiArt Framework, which the beautiful Rayman: Legends was built around.

I’ve got high hopes for this little title. The developers have mentioned that there will be some humour throughout the game to contrast the bleakness of the subject matter, and of course at the centre of it all is a hopefully touching character-driven story, but I hope they don’t stay too far away from the horror of the war. It would be too easy for the war to be used simply as a backdrop and nothing more.

Valiant Hearts is a downloadable title and will be available sometime in 2014 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC .
