The launch of a Grand Theft Auto game has become a cultural phenomenon, surpassing even that of games like Call of Duty. Even mainstreams news outlets that never normally bother with videogames feel compelled to talk about GTA whenever a new one launches in order to gain themselves a little more traffic. It doesn’t matter if you’re a gamer or not, when a Grand Theft Auto games launches you know about it.
So, it’s not surprising to learn, then, that the GTA V launch shattered records, pulling in a grand total of $800 million in sales on the first day, beating the previous record holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which scored itself $500 million.
Back in 2008 GTA IV managed to earn $380 within its first 24-hours of sale, so GTA V has managed to more than double that, which is incredible.
Of course there’s another Call of Duty game due to hit this year, so GTA V’s new record could be taken away from it, though it’s hard to tell.
