Microsoft’s Albert Penello today stated in an interview today that without the day one update for the Xbox One the console would be able to do, “very little.”
Endgadget posed a scenario in which you had just bought the Xbox One and a game. and got it home, but your Internet was out for the day. What exactly could you do with the console? Could you play the game?
The answer, according to Penello, is no.
“Nothing. You need the Day One update,” he said. ”
This does seem a little contradictory to another statement he made during the interview, in which he said, “”Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update,”
Regardless it seems your consoles will be very limited with an Internet connection.
“A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done,” Penello also added. “You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing’.”
So, in essence you’re actually buying a games console that does not work out of the box. It’s a broken system until you are able to connect to the Internet and download the update. Of course with the majority of gamers these days having a connection it’s not a problem that will effect many, but is it just me or does selling a product which essentially does not have the capability of performing its primary function without an update feel completely wrong?
