European consumers rejoice, as the European Parliment has ruled that internet service providers will not be allowed to charge data intensive companies such as Netflix more.
With companies like Netflix now able to stream HD movies and TV episodes to customers, and the growing popularity of such services, internet providers have been vying for the ability to charge those companies more, which in turn would likely result in the consumer being charged extra to make up the difference. Sadly in the U.S. internet providers were successful in their attack, resulting in Netflix and other such companies having to hand over more cash.
This new European ruling will ensure that doesn’t happen here, and will cover future projects, such as Playstation Now which allows entire games to be streamed. Had ISPs won the right to charge more we could have seen some pretty hefty pricetags popping up on the Playstation Now service.
