Apparently the rumours were true as 2K Games have now officially announced a new Borderlands game, brilliantly titled Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Yup, that’s its actual name.

The big news is that Gearbox aren’t the ones making it, although they’ll still play some role in development, presumably as tyrannical overlords with whips in hand. Rather 2K Australia is the company in charge of bringing this latest installment of gun porn to our screens.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set during the first game and Borderlands 2, and will follow the story of a young Handsome Jack, charting his rise from humble programmer to not-so-humble super-villain. The entire game takes place on the moon of Pandora, and thus features low-gravity, allowing for massive jumps and twists on the usual combat formulas. Jetpacks will also be involved.

Naturally there shall be a vast array of new weapons to enjoy, with two new types revealed: Cryo obviously freezes targets, while Lasers make you think your in Star Trek.

But the biggest and most interesting gameplay shift, at least in my eyes, is the inclusion of oxygen as an important resource. In order to survive you’ll need to scavenge oxygen tanks from around the environment, otherwise you’ll suffocate. In a neat twist your jetpack needs oxygen to function, and so if you’re running low you’ll need to seriously consider if making a certain jump to access a weapons chest is worth it.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will arrive sometime in the fall of this year on last-gen consoles only, meaning Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as PC.
