Ninja Theory’s divisive DmC: Devil May Cry is coming to Xbox One and PS4 in the form of a revamped Definitive Edition.
Firstly the game will now run at 1080p and 60FPS on both consoles. But the changes don’t end there. On top of including all the existing DLC the Definitive Edition will contain two new game modes. Turbo Mode will make the game run 20% faster, but the more interesting addition is Hardcore Mode which rebalances the style system to make high rankings harder to achieve and decay faster, makes parrying harder, stops Devil Trigger launching enemies into the air and finally bumps up enemy damage output.
But there’s more yet. Vergil’s Bloody Palace includes 60 new Bloody Palace levels which let you play as Vergil. Then there’s Must Style Mode in which players have to attain an S rank in order to actually do any damage, plus a Gods Must Die mode where enemies spawn with Devil Trigger and no health items can be used.
Ninja Theory have also added in a manual lock-on system with configurable controls and have also rebalanced huge chunks of the game, removing a few frames here and tweaking the parry/dodge windows there.
Chuck in some community mods, like being able to hit red and blue enemies with any weapon, and some bonus skins and you’ve got a substantial package.
The current trend of remastering games is pissing me off a lot, but I did really enjoy DmC and felt the actual quality of the game got somewhat buried under a landslide of fan’s defending their beloved series, a series which it needs to be said I’ve poured hundreds of hours into. This revamped edition might give the game a second chance to be seen as a good hack and slash in its own right.
