In an open letter on the official Respawn blog the company announced that alongside EA and Lucasfilm they’re working on a third-person Star Wars game.
“I have been playing Star Wars games my whole life, now I get to make a Star Wars game. On top of that, I get to do it at Respawn, a studio comprised of the most talented collection of game makers, creators, visionaries, and (most importantly) advocates for the player, that I have had the good fortune to work with. And we, like you all, have no shortage of Star Wars passion.” said Stig Asmussen. “The entire company erupted in cheers when it was announced that this would be our next endeavor.”
Understandably details are thin on the ground, and even Respawn themselves that a third-person action/adventure game set in the Star Wars universe sounds a bit dry. However, they also said, “developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within.”
This announcement is coinciding with an expansion of the company as a whole, as the blog post also mentioned that they’ve already got a small but talented team working on the project, but that they’re also looking to hire new people across ALL their departments. Doubtless this is so they can develop not only this new project but also the already announced Titanfall 2.
Titanfall was fairly divisive among gamers, but personally I really enjoyed it. The core mechanics were so wonderfully smooth and beautifully executed. It just needed a bit more depth to keep people hooked for longer. With that in mind I’m quite excited to see what Respawn can do with the Star Wars license. Perhaps a spirtual successor to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a concept that I always felt had a lot more potential than was ever shown. Given Respawns existing pedigree, though, something with guns seems a bit more likely.
