Ubisoft and Massive’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will launch on December 7th for Xbox, Playstation and PC. The news comes via the recent Ubisoft Forward where the company showed off several of its upcoming titles.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was originally meant to come out late last year, around the time that Avatar: Way of the Water hit cinemas. Without a new Avatar movie on the big screen, Frontiers of Pandora might find it a little harder to shift copies, but then again I’ve always found it difficult to judge the popularity of the Avatar franchise. Although both films have grossed absurd amounts of money, nobody ever seems to talk about them.

Anyway, along with the announcement of the game’s release date, Ubisoft put out a trailer that gives us a decent look at what Frontiers of Pandora will be when it launches. At first glance, it does seem like it adheres to the typical Ubisoft open-world formula, at times even looking like a reskin of Far Cry. But push that aside and I do think the game looks quite good – the world looks beautiful and playing as a Na’vi could make things very fun indeed if Ubisoft actually leans into it.

It’s not the first time Ubisoft has attempted to adapt James Cameron’s movies. In 2009 they released Avatar: The Game to coincide with the first movie. While Avatar would go on to break the $1 billion barrier, and then the $2 billion barrier, the video game managed to shift 2.7 million copies.

And because it’s Ubisoft, there are three different versions of the game available to pre-order on their website, although you really should just wait for the game to come out in order to see what kind of state it’s in.
