While it may be slightly dry listening, the court case between Microsoft and the FTC continues to be a font of intriguing information, such as Microsoft themselves declaring that they’ve lost the console war.

In documents released today, Microsoft addressed its promise to allow Call of Duty games to launch on Playstation for at least the next ten years, should the deal to purchase Activision-Blizzard go through.

“This term would in any case go beyond the expected starting period of the next generation of consoles (in 2028),” Microsoft said. “Thus, Call of Duty will be published on successor PlayStation consoles should one be released during the term of the agreement. The agreement also would ensure that Call of Duty console games are offered on PlayStation at parity with Xbox.”

Sony has also indicated this to be true. In a document released last year, Sony said that it expected to lost access to Call of Duty in 2027. They then went on to say that by the time they launch their next-generation console they wouldn’t have access to the franchise, indicating that they were intending to bring out the Playstation 6 in 2028 at the earliest.

Microsoft’s wording could also imply that their own next-generation console is intended to launch around the same time.

The timeframe would certainly line up. Thus far, Sony’s cadence has been to launch a new console every 6-7 years.
