Just over a month after its release, Capcom has announced that Street Fighter 6 has surpassed 2 million copies sold. They also revealed that a new fighter, Rashid, will launch on July 24th.
The last game in the series, Street Fighter V, managed to sell 7 million copies, an impressive number for any fighting game. It’s a record that Capcom intend on smashing however. Speaking to Famitsu, Haruhiro Tsujimoto stated that their aim is to sell 10 million copies of Street Fighter 6, easily making it the best selling home console game in the franchise.
That number would still put it behind Mortal Kombat 11, though, which has managed to sell over 15 million copies.
It took Tekken 7, launched in 2015, until December of 2022 to achieve 10 million sales.
Aside from detailing the exact sales target for Street Fighter 6, Tsujimoto also talked about how Capcom has shifted to a new strategy where they aim to continue marketing and selling a game heavily for three years, indicating that Street Fighter 6 will continue to be pushed until at least 2026.
“From 2021 onwards, we have set a goal of ‘selling titles three years after their release’, and have been working hard to achieve that goal”, he explained in the Famitsu interview.
“Before digital versions became commonplace, most of our games were physical versions sold at stores, but due to shelf efficiency we could only ship as many copies as would sell in six months.”
“This meant we were in a situation where we couldn’t keep selling games after that period, even if we wanted to. In the last few years, purchasing in a digital store has become more commonplace.”
“The reason we’ve set a three-year period is that our standard payback period for development is around two years, and so there’s still merit in selling titles from the third year and beyond at a lower unit price.”
Its an interesting little insight into how company’s like Capcom view the sales period and how the shift to digital has changed that perspective.
And Street Fighter 6 certainly looks like it will achieve the 10 million goal. It currently holds a 92 on Opencritic and seems to have garnered an excellent reception from the hardcore fanbase who have been itching for a new entry in the series.
