Payday developer Starbreeze is making a live-service Dungeons & Dragons game codenamed Project Baxter.

News comes via the studio itself which announced that it is aiming for a 2026 launch date on “all major platforms.”

The new game will,  “carry the signature Starbreeze game cornerstones of co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service model, community engagement and a larger-than-life experience.” said Starbreeze, all while probably hoping that you don’t remember the embarrassing launch of Payday 3 earlier this year. In case you forgot, the cooperative heist game was largely unplayable for the first week due to matchmaking issues.

Embracer, who own Starbreeze, also publically stated that Payday 3, “performed below management expectations.” That’s important because Embracer is currently trying to keep its ship afloat by closing studios and sacking employees.

Details are understandably thin on the ground, begging the question of why it was even worth announcing the game at this point. The reality is, that studios often announce titles well before they have anything to show purely to attract talent to help create the game.

The only thing to glean is that Starbreeze described it as being “an amazing Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure.” Perhaps it will involve pulling off daring heists like the Payday games. I could totally get behind a Dungeons & Dragons heist game where you have to steal a dragon’s treasure horde.

Of course, Dungeons & Dragons is having a pretty good year in terms of videogames and movies. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most popular games of the year and has sold a staggering amount of copies, while Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves did very well at the box office.
