Today’s State of Play event from Sony featured a look at the upcoming sequel to Death Stranding from mastermind and possible lunatic Hideo Kojima.

In true Kojima the 9-minute trailer is absolutely batshit crazy, featuring a talking doll that looks an awful lot like Alan Wake, some sort of electric guitar that literally fires lighting bolts and a spaceship flying out of a baby’s mouth. It may very well be the single most barmy trailer ever released for a video game, and I’m sure a legion of fans will be poring over its every day right now to see what new information can be gleaned from its many nooks and crannies.

After a quick viewing or two, a few things are clear. We are, of course, once again stepping into the well-travelled shoes of Sam Bridges, once again played by Norman Reedus. This time though, we’re going to be working for a group by the name of Drawbridge which is funded by some sort of generous patron – sounds ominous. It looks like we can also expect a much wider variety of scenery this time, too.

“Embark on an inspiring mission of human connection beyond the UCA. Sam—with companions by his side—sets out on a new journey to save humanity from extinction,” reads the official description. “Join them as they traverse a world beset by otherworldly enemies, obstacles and a haunting question: should we have connected? Step by step, legendary game creator Hideo Kojima changes the world once again.”

Alongside the trailer we also get a few more pieces of information – specifically, a release window and a name. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will come out in 2025.
