Marvel has announced its second new game in as many weeks. Marvel Rivals is an Overwatch-inspired free-to-play game coming to PC, with two teams of 6 players each duking it out as a host of classic Marvel characters.

It’s being developed by the controversial Chinese giant  NetEase who say they’ve put together a new internal team  “composed of global talent who previously worked on hit franchises such as Call of Duty and Battlefield.”

According to NetEase, teammates will be able to team up to use special combination attacks. In one example NetEase gave, Hulk can charge up Iron Man’s armour with a gamma surge for extra damage.

As a free-to-play game you can expect the usual seasons which will add in new maps and characters. So far 13 characters have been revealed, including some big hitters like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Magneto and Loki, as well as some lesser-known characters like Peni Parker.

“The merciless clash between the tyrannical dictator Doctor Doom and his future counterpart from the year 2099 has forced countless universes to collide in the Timestream Entanglement, creating new worlds and crises still unknown,” reads the game’s official plot description.

“Now, Super Heroes and Super Villains from across the multiverse must fight together and against one another as disparate groups seek to defeat both Dooms before one achieves domination of these realities. Familiar faces become newfound foes while former enemies become the greatest of allies in Marvel Rivals.”

According to one person on Reddit who claims to have been in the closed beta, Marvel Rivals is a “straight up overwatch clone.” with the only difference being that it’s in 3rd person.

While its certainly not a very creative choice, Overwatch does have some of the best core gameplay in the business, so if the team at NetEase can capture that and combine it with famous Marvel characters, it could produce a solid game. Whether that will be enough to compete in the crowded free-to-play market is hard to say though, especially since we know Marvel typically takes a 30% licensing fee.

Other leaks have revealed a bunch more characters and locations as well.

A closed beta will be launched in May.

Last week Marvel also revealed a new game titled 1943: Rise of Hydra, a single-player action-adventure featuring Captain America and Black Panther.
