Following some leaks, Ubisoft has announced The Rogue Prince of Persia, a new game due to launch in Early Access on Steam on May 14. No other platforms have been revealed yet, but it’s likely that once it exists Early Access it will launch on console, too.

The game is being developed by Evil Empire, a development team that splintered off from Dead Cells’ developer Motion Twin with the goal of supporting Dead Cells post-launch. It’s no surprise that The Rogue Prince of Persia takes a lot of inspiration from Dead Cells, including the rogue-lite design.

The art style is striking and radically different from any of the other Prince of Persia games we’ve seen, including the recent and excellent Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. The gameplay harks back to the side-scrolling days of the franchise, featuring randomly generated 2D levels where you’ll fight and platform.

IGN has already had a chance to go hands-on with the game. In their write-up, they said, “The Rogue Prince of Persia may not look exactly like Dead Cells – it swaps the latter’s 16-bit sprites for a stylised sheen more befitting a Saturday morning cartoon – but it certainly plays like Dead Cells.”

They did note key differences between The Rogue Prince of Persia and Dead Cells, though. For example, the Prince is more acrobatic, able to wall-run with a squeeze of the left trigger.

They ended their preview by saying, “There’s no question that Dead Cells walked so that The Rogue Prince of Persia could wall-run, but although its fundamentals may be familiar, the greater freedom of movement and striking art style of Evil Empire’s new adventure has certainly made me keen to explore it more and experiment further with its various weapons and buffs.”

This will be the second Prince of Persia game released this year, but it’s not all good news for the franchise. According to Insider Gaming, the troubled development of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is worse than we thought. In a report they published, Insider Gaming claims that the Remake has been completely remade following it switching developers, and footage they were shown indicates a game far away from being ready for public consumption.
