I bring shocking news, people: a triple-A videogame has gone well beyond it’s expected budget. You don’t seem surprised. Why aren’t you surprised?
This time it’s the upcoming revival of Fable from Playground Games which will launch on Xbox and PlayStation in February of 2027, right alongside God of War: Laufey.
According to Jez Corden over at Windows Central, sources told him that the game had run “uncomfortably” overbudget. Fable was announced back in 2020, but there were rumours about Playground making a Fable game as far back as 2018, so the development has been running for a while now. Hardly surprising it has blown through its budget, then.
Originally, the new Albion adventure was supposed to launch this year, but the release was delayed so that Fable wouldn’t have to duke it out with GTA V. Instead, it’s wound up picking a fight with Kratos’ dead wife.
Fable is also a little weird because it’s launching on Xbox, PC and PS5. That’s despite the recent shift back toward exclusives (well, exclusive if you ignore them launching on PC) that Xbox boss Asha Sharma announced. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will both be Xbox exclusives, but since Fable was previously announced as coming to PS5 it will still launch on Sony’s machine.
That’s also why Halo: Campaign Evolved also just landed on PlayStation, too, brigning arguably the most iconic Xbox character to the competition for the first time ever. That ones a bit weirder, though, because Halo Studios themselves promised that all future Halo games would launch on PlayStation going forward. Will Xbox stick to that promise? Does Xbox even know what they plan on doing?
Regardless, I’m cautiously optimistic about Fable. I love the franchise and would be very happy to see it return. It’s a whole new developer and a completely different time, but I hope that Playground and Xbox can do Fable justice.
