New Quake? In this economy? Yes, there’s new Quake, my friends. Sadly, it isn’t a brand new game in the iconic Quake series, but rather a free update for the original game, available right now to download and play.

Quake: Dawn of the Machine marks Quake’s 30th anniversary and contains 19 new maps in a brand new campaign from the combined brains of MachineGames and id Software.

“As the battle-hardened Ranger, players survive a labyrinthine dimension where time folds back onto itself, creating a unique looping structure where each visit in the present reshapes the future,” says the official website.

“Collect runes to unlock previously sealed paths brimming with new routes, encounters and secrets, plus persistent health and ammunition upgrades throughout add a new layer of progression to Quake’s classic gameplay.”

You can expect new enemy types such as the  Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, Blood Shambler and more, plus new weapon variants, including the lightning-charged Super Axe or the Laser Cannon.

To get hold of the update, all you need is to own Quake on  Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Microsoft PC Store, Game Pass, PC Game Pass, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 (via backwards compatibility) Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4.

Hopefully, this might lay the groundwork for a new Quake game in the future, although that future remains clouded by the massive Xbox layoffs which saw id Software and MachineGames heavily affected.
