For a while now, there have been rumours of a new version of Xbox Elite controller being developed, and now we have proof because it’s somehow ended up in a random person’s hands.

Over on Reddit, user ssuberflex posted a series of images of the controller, which was bought on Offer Up for $200. At first glance, everything seems normal, but on closer inspection it becomes apparent that ssuberflex has somehow ended up with a controller that matches the prior leaks.

How and why it has wound up in a random person’s hands is unclear. Offer Up is for buying and selling locally, so there’s a chance this was stolen, but it seems more likely that an Xbox employee or former Xbox employee decided to get a quick cash boost.

But it’s very clearly not meant to be available to the public, as evidenced by the “Prototype: Not for sale” printed on the battery.

There’s a small screen on top of the controller and a scroll wheel on the bottom. It also appears to have the new built-in cloud support, again matching the prior rumours.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be working. According to ssuberlex, it won’t pair with his console or work with a cable – it just shows a blinking red light. This could be because the controller simply isn’t support yet, although a PC should still be able to see it as a generic controller. It could also be tied to a developer’s machine, or it may even have been shut down by Xbox itself once it realised one of the controllers was in the wild.

Xbox is also alleged to be working on another, cheaper Cloud controller.

Of course, this could be an elaborate hoax. The account is brand-new with no other posting history, after all. That said, this kind of stuff has happened before so it wouldn’t surprise me if a disgruntled former Xbox employee decided to flip it for a quick payday.
