The hype around GTA 6 is beyond crazy at this point, and the leaks are just as bonkers, but there has also been plenty of backlash as well due to the lack of a physical edition and the withholding of in-game content unless you shell out for the Ultimate Edition. And now there might be some sort of mysterious monthly subscription to consider.

That’s according to Adam Sessler, anyway.

Adam Sessler is hardly some random internet leaker. He’s a veteran games journalist and presenter best known for hosting X-Play on G4, and has spent decades working in and around the games industry, giving him the sort of contacts who could plausibly feed him information. That said, Sessler isn’t known for having a proven track record of breaking major leaks, and in recent years he’s also become a fairly…erm, controversial and combative figure online. In other words, there’s enough industry pedigree here that the claim is worth paying attention to, but nowhere near enough of a track record to take it as gospel. Pinch of salt, people. Pinch of salt.

During his latest Twitch stream, Sessler and his guest touched upon GTA 6, at which point Sessler’s guest stated that he had heard the game might have some sort of monthly subscription.

Sessler’s response was arguably even more intriguing, as he suggested other information he’d heard — but wasn’t willing to discuss — could explain why Rockstar might introduce such a subscription.

“If for some of the stuff I’ve heard, that I’m not gonna talk about, there’s a reason for that monthly subscription. Ya know what, I’m more interested to see how they introduce an idea like that, if that is the case, because whew. Ya know what, I’m gonna hide under my desk when something like that is announced.” – Adam Sessler, 1:26.15

Sessler could be describing the next iteration of GTA Online here. Currently, there’s the GTA+ subscription, but that’s completely optional. Perhaps Rockstar is planning to make a subscription mandatory for the next iteration of GTA Online. That would certainly explain why Sessler seems to expect the announcement to go down like a lead balloon.

Keep in mind, GTA 6 is currently only being advertised as a single-player game, where you wouldn’t normally expect to find a monthly subscription. Which raises another terrifying option: the single-player game is somehow going to include a subscription for something. Yup, that would certainly set the world ablaze.

But Online moving to a mandatory subscription seems like a very real possibility, turning the already money-making juggernaut into a money-making nuclear reactor.
