Grab a net, boys and girls, because the newest rumour on the block is that Sony wants to bring Ape Escape back.

That’s according to NateTheHate who tends to go by NateDrake on gaming forum ResetEra. NateTheHate is an industry insider who appears to have a great number of sources and a pretty damn good track record, but as always his claims should still be taken with a pinch of salt. Plus, plans change, sources might report out of date information etc.

Nate was summoned from whatever dimension he was chilling in by someone specifically wondering out loud if NateTheHate might know anything about a possible Ape Escape revival, since two other sources had hinted toward it.

Nate chose to respond by pointing out that “I said a while ago, Sony is looking to bring back some dormant franchises.”

Another user got excited by the prospect that Team Asobi might be the ones in charge of resurrecting the iconic franchise, but Nate squashed that idea, stating outright that that it’s “not Asobi.”

Nor is Bandai Namco involved, either, as another user postulated. But Nate does say “But I’d have to check further to be 100% certain, as it has been a while since I last checked in on the project.”

As for the other two sources that the original commentor mentioned, my best guess is that it’s referring to comments made by Andy Robinson and Jeff Gerstmann/Jordan Middler.

Back in January of 2025, Andy Robinson stated on the VGC podcast that Sony was busy working on “at least a couple” of deep-cut old IP projects. He didn’t name Ape Escape directly, but it became a prominent fan theory that the old-school PlayStation title was one of them.

During an April appearance on The Jeff Gerstmann Show this year, VGC’s Jordan Middler casually suggested Sony could “announce that Ape Escape they’re making” while the pair discussed the company’s future line-up. Gerstmann replied that it was “too early” to talk about Ape Escape specifically, but said he had a gut feeling, combined with information he had heard, that Sony could be looking to revive some older catalogue franchises.

Middler brought the series up again on a later VGC Podcast, saying Sony needed to “get that little ape back.” That one reads much more like him wanting a new game than him reporting one, though, so it is probably best viewed as background noise rather than a separate hint. NateTheHate’s comments are the first time somebody has suggested an Ape Escape project exists while also offering even a small detail about who is not making it.
