Xbox has announced a new pocket-sized controller called the Xbox Nano Controller.
The new controller is just 5 inches long and weighs in at 3.5 ounces, which Xbox boasts makes it lighter and shorter than most modern smartphones. Despite that, it still packs all 18 of the normal controls, including a customisable “action” button that can be used for screenshots, gameplay captures or “other frequently used shortcuts”.
“The pocketable design also makes it easy to slip into a bag or bring along for the day, giving you a convenient way to play whether you’re traveling, visiting friends and family, or simply taking games like Forza Horizon 6 beyond the living room,” says Xbox.com.
Connectivity is handled via Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth.
While the new controller can be used on a regular Xbox console and might be a good choice for young gamers with smaller hands, the Nano seems heavily geared toward Cloud streaming. The small size makes it easy to take with you and then connect it to a phone, tablet, laptop or smart TV.
Supporting that idea, Xbox is teaming up with Samsung in the US on a “special” Xbox Nano controller and two months of Game Pass Ultimate when you buy select Samsung TVs, which already come with the Xbox app.
Xbox is also teaming with Meta on another US holiday deal that bundles an Xbox Nano controller and two months of Ultimate for new members who purchase a Meta Quest.
Interestingly, this new controller was actually leaked a while back, but at the time it was believed it would have wi-fi 6 capability, giving it the potential to connect directly to the Xbox Cloud servers to reduce latency. There’s no mention of that here, though.
