The next entry in the God of War series has been delayed until May 27, 2027, raising the usual question: is it actually possible to release a big triple-A game without it being delayed at least once?

And on a sidenote, I learned today that God of War Laufey does not have a colon in its name.

Santa Monica Studio made the announcement on their social media pages, giving the standard reason for the delay: polish.

Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much exciment for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans.

With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027.

We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.

On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we’lll be back to share more updates soon. – Santa Monica Studio.

The game was originally meant to drop in February, where it would let players take on the role of Kratos wife Faye as she enters the Everywhen, a realm where Gods go when they die. There, she meets a talking gelatinous cube known as Franque and a talking tassle attached to a sword. Y’know, everyday stuff.

This seems like it may of been a fairly new decision, because just a few weeks ago there was a collector’s box announced to launch alongside the game. I doubt they would have made that announcement if they knew the game was going to be delayed, although the box doesn’t actually contain the game, so they could still launch it ahead of May 27.

So far, the game looks fine. I’m not sure how interested I am in a God of War game that doesn’t feature Kratos. Hell, God of War: Sons of Sparta had this problem because it featured a teenage Kratos who really didn’t resemble the character.

That said, Laufey has an interest plot hook: the afterlife for the Gods is going to contain an awful of people that Kratos put their via his various temper tantrums.
