The best-selling game of the year so far is not a massive triple-A release from a gigantic company. It’s not an annual release. Nope, it’s a game about sticking yourself to a wall and painting your nude body to hide from a bunch of hunters, and it was made by just 2 people over the course of a few months.
Yes, with a confirmed 15 million copies sold, Meccha Chameleon is currently the best-selling game of the year, and the fastest-selling.
Niko Partners video game analyst Daniel Ahmad tweeted that 15 million copies sold makes Meccha Chameleon “both the fastest selling and highest selling game of the year.” And just a few days ago, Alinea Analytics said much the same, claiming at the time it had shifted 13 million copies which made it the best-selling game of the year so far.
That means it has beaten out the likes of FC 26, Resident Evil Requiem and Slay the Spire 2.
Of course, social media and just plain luck have both played huge parts in the game’s success. Streamers picked it up as the latest friendslop game and from there it grew rapidly, aided by the fact that it costs a little more a sandwich from the supermarket.
I don’t mean this in a horrible way: I think the idea for the game is fantastic, and obviously heaps of fun. That said, I’m still a little shocked by the insane success it has achieved. Probably not as shocked as the developers, though, who must currently be going through some sort of shock. Maybe not, mind you, because they’ve been putting out updates at a pretty rapid pace.
Anyway, Meccha Chameleon will lost its position as the best-selling and fastest-selling game when GTA 6 crashes into the earth like a nuclear bomb launched from the moon. But it’ll still have a chance at 2nd place. Do you think anything can beat it?
