The Playstation Showcase was just okay

After 600 days without a Showcase, expectations were high for Sony to show us what the next year or two is going to look like for Playstation. They’ve been fairly quiet thus far, leaving us very little to look forward to after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Of course, hype is dangerous because it leads to dissapointment, and yet I don’t think it was unfair to be hyped for the Showcase. Many of Sony’s biggest studios haven’t released anything for a few years, so the timing was absolutely ripe for Sony to spend an hour show off exclusive after exclusive. But that isn’t what happened. Join me as I recap the Showcase and explain why I think it was underwhelming.

The Playstation hand-held streaming device is real and still stupid

Days before the Playstation Showcase, SIE CEO Jim Ryan proclaimed in a Sony business call that they were planning  “some fairly interesting and quite aggressive plans” in regards to streaming and cloud-based gaming. Well, the first step of that seems to be Project Q, a handheld streaming device.

Bungie is making a new Marathon game for multiple platforms

Sony might own Bungie, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping Bungie from announcing its latest project for Playstation, Xbox and PC. In a rather surprising reveal during the Playstation Showcase, the legendary studio that brought us Halo and Destiny is returning to its oldest series, Marathon. This will be their first new project in a decade, so the hype is real.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake/Remaster to be Shown Soon

The existence of a Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake was first reported on by VGC back in 2021 and the news instantly got people talking. Since then various little rumours and whispers have circulated, but they’ve ramped up considerably over the past few months. Now, Windows Central’s Jez Corden says he’s managed to “hard-confirm” that it’s real and coming soon.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Will Not Have Co-op, Confirms Insomniac

Speculation that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, rumoured to be launching at the end of the year, will feature some sort of co-op mode has been swirling since it was first revealed. The fact that it would star both Peter Parker and Miles Morales swinging around instantly got people thinking, and then some Internet sleuths found files in the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man that referenced co-op.

Playstation Showcase is Happening Next Week – What Can We Expect?

Sony has announced that they will be holding a Playstation Showcase event on May 24 at 1pm PT / 4pm ET / 9pm UK, streamed live on Youtube and Twitch. The show, which Sony states will be just over an hour long, will include looks at first-party PS5 and PS VR 2 titles, as well as some third-party games. Nothing specific has been confirmed.

Zelda Dominates the UK Boxed Charts

The UK chart for boxed game sales has arrived, bringing with it lots of fun little statistical factoids that I love to geek out over. It’s possible that I need to seriously examine my life choices, but for now I’m going to enjoy the numbers and hope that you do to.

The Gaming Headlines, Feb 13 – Feb 20, 2023

I’m not exactly known for being consistent when it comes to putting out a weekly post, as my Best of Xbox Game Pass series knows all too well. But I’m going to give it another shot with this format which is a simple look at some of the week’s biggest videogame-related headlines with a few of my own thoughts thrown into the mix.

God of War: Ragnarock Review – It’s Awesome

Following up on greatness is never easy. Santa Monica had the element of surprise when they revived God of War in 2018 and so when the world got to experience the epic return of Kratos it became a hit of Godlike proportions, selling millions of copies, snatching up awards like Kratos grabbing Hacksilver and becoming one of the most beloved Playstation games in history. But God of War: Ragnarock doesn’t have the element of surprise; we know what to expect now, what Santa Monica can do with the Ghost of Sparta. So after a 4-year wait, has God of War: Ragnarock delivered the epic climax we were all hoping for?
